Cycle through the Villages to the beach to Surf

We had some guests visiting Soukya Homestays from Ireland and the UK; it was their first time in India and Tamil Nadu. After a few days in the busy city of Chennai, they were excited to drive down the East Coast Road (ECR) and see the Coromandel Coast on the left from their car window. The sea had settled down mid-Monsoon, and was a nice blue colour again, reminding us there is a summer, in what seems like the winter during Monsoon season. After turning just before the Crocodile Bank Village, a U-turn at the Water tank, 300m back towards Chennai, you will see a small road to the left leading to a Temple and Temple Tank of Water. Our Villas are located on the right side, in 7 acres of landscaped garden, surrounded by water filled lakes, looking onto the backwaters, known as the Buckingham Canal.

After checking in, they had a refreshing swim in the pool to wash the city and the journey away, settled into relax for the afternoon and enjoy a meal before sleep. In the morning they decided to take our bicycles and go for an exploration from the Villas through the neighboring villages, across the ECR and down to Covelong Point Surfing School. The transition from luxurious Villa, to rural village, where they saw new born calves, lilly filled ponds, reflections of the trees in the water, a temple, children, people who waved with curiosity at these two foreign travelers on bicycles. They stopped for fresh coconut water at the Perumal Temple, where many visitors were there dressed in new clothes, jasmine flowers in their hair, walked barefoot to worship their gods and pray for their families, friends.

Once they crossed the busy ECR, they entered Kovalam Village and followed the signs for the surfing school, when they reached the beach they were overwhelmed at the lovely blue colour of the ocean, cleanliness of the beach and the Surfing School, which was built just a few years ago, with full watersports activities, shower, toilet facilities and a café called ‘surf turf’ upstairs. The surf instructors are all ISA qualified and from the local village, they are watermen and also competitors in the India Surfing competitions. Our guests had a cold iced tea to quench their thirst after the cycle and then jumped into the sea and tried their hand at catching a wave. All in all a fantastic morning’s activity, which lead to a well-deserved relaxing afternoon back at Soukya Homestays. Just jump on a bike and see where the road takes you.

Open your windows to welcome the serene breeze from the Bay of Bengal and relax in your holiday villa with your loved ones. With a host of options for recreation on your doorstep or a short drive away, our job is to make your stay at Soukya Homestays completely comfortable and relaxing.
